Even The Wind And Waves Obey Him…

Matthew 8:27: “The men were amazed and asked, “What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!”

But that’s the thing, He isn’t just a man.

It’s insane to me that the apostles stood in Jesus’ presence—and at some point they didn’t understand who they were with. To think, fullness of God, standing on the beach He created, next to His creation. The very God who spoke the universe into existence, who said a couple phrases and the sun appeared, who was now filled with blood vessels that could rip and had two eyes that could shed real, hot tears…

Whew. It’s a lot to imagine. And I’m excited to one day have the honor of bowing in Christ’s holy presence. Until then, I can live vicariously through the people that got to hug Him, skin to skin.

It’s hard to imagine Jesus in the flesh having the fullness of God in Him. But that’s just it, we can’t fathom every mystery of God. Some things we have the privilege of learning through His Word. Other things are left in earthly obscurity. We can’t know it. We know that a cup of water is finite, that books have chapters and dogs are clever. We don’t know how to create a universe nor how to sustain it moment by moment—like God. We are like God in many ways, but we are not sovereign, all-wise and infinite like He is. And there are things about Him our minds can’t wrap around.

And that’s okay.

Faith fills in those gaps for us. I don’t understand everything, but I believe. Just like I don’t understand even basic chemistry but I believe in it. Just like the men on that ship didn’t understand how Jesus calmed the storm, but they believed.

I’m glad the Christ I served isn’t just flesh and blood. I’m glad the fullness of God dwells in Him, and He can calm every storm.
