One of my most vivid childhood memories was this: I was standing in church with mommy, her friend from Trinidad and a few other people who blurred on the fringes of this memory. We all stood on the balcony. The side door was open and the noonday heat rolled in busily, clashing with the inside air conditioning. It made me feel sticky in my frock, but the bright light was welcomed. In fact, it illuminated the face of mommy’s friend.
This lady was always nice to me. I thought about that while we all stood around. I knew I could trust her—she was someone I could open up to and be myself with. But still, when she spoke to me, I couldn’t meet her gaze. My eyes were fixed to the floor between us. Then, she performed a single act of kindness. She lifted my chin with a manicured index finger, and she looked me right in the eyes. As if speaking to me with her gaze, her voice rang clear…
Truth is, I didn’t realize how unworthy I felt before this small encounter. I wish I knew then what I know now.
Black girl, you are worthy. In fact, you are more than enough.
